What is a GEO satellite?
Despite the similar acronym structure to MEO and LEO satellites, the “E” in GEO stands for “Equatorial.” Unfortunately, we didn’t get a say in the naming conventions.
GEO satellites, often referred to as “traditional” satellites, are typically what most people envision when they think of satellites. These satellites have long been used for providing satellite-based communication services. They are the type used to transmit TV channels to remote areas, provide Sky Muster connectivity for nbn, facilitate traditional satellite phone connections, and are commonly found on cruise ships.

Altitude That Covers Everything
GEO satellites orbit at approximately 35,000 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, more than 35 times further than LEO satellites. Due to their high altitude, just three GEO satellites can cover the entire planet.
The advantage of this extensive coverage comes with the trade-off of higher latency due to the distance from Earth, which can affect the quality of video calls and online gaming.
